Oh Messy Life #21: Things I Can't Stop Thinking About, vol. 2
Plus a Proper Chune courtesy Selma Gomez and Benny Blanco
Welcome to Human Pursuits, the column that features need-to-know names and stories in media and other creative spaces. Today, a few things I’m currently fixated on, and updates from Friends of the Newsletter.
On Sunday, we saw do his lil’ thang as part of the So True tour. I enjoyed pretty much every minute, but was especially (surprisingly?) moved by the last thing he said: “Two things people are short on right now are time and money, and so we appreciate you spending yours with us.” A small comment, but it speaks to the current moment.
That said, his crowd was noticeably stinky. Part of this, I think, is that the Vogue Theatre runs hot. In any case, the natural deodorant was not working.
Sunshine baby: I think I’m above seasonal depression until Vancouver gets 20 minutes of sun and I suddenly rediscover the will to live.
Related – I’ve been judging my weeks by how long I go before wearing a hoodie to work. This week we made it to Tuesday.
We watched the Severance season 2 finale twice, and I have to admit: I do not understand why Lumon would want to kill Gemma.
I took photos of Beably Point’s show at The Pearl on Saturday. They turned out pretty well!
Oh Messy Life
ICYMI: I really enjoyed Friday’s conversation with Timm Chiusano. My one regret is that I didn’t ask him more about his background in TV production. Totally forgot about that aspect of his career.
I’ve mentioned them a few times in recent months, but I think is doing a wonderful job rolling out their new album, Who Will Look After The Dogs? Yesterday, they dropped a new song plus U.S. tour dates with Jeff Rosenstock and announced a run in Australia and New Zealand.
Charly Bliss is playing Four Chords Music Festival in Pittsburgh this September. I was listening to Forever at the gym this morning. Still bangs.
The good brother Tom Breihan has been on a bit of a run lately. I loved his pieces on M.I.A’s Arular and Playboy Carti’s MUSIC.
I only read one piece of Paris Fashion Week content this year, and it was on why “The Runways Look a Lot Like Resale Sites This Season.”
Oh, and has a new series interviewing UPS drivers.
Proper Chune
This week has been all about the Benny-ssance. Specifically, Benny Blanco is getting praise for his contributions to pop, and, more generally, being a stand-up guy. I like several songs on his new album with Selena Gomez. Start here.
My next guest is…
Author and journalist Kevin Nguyen. His new book, Mỹ Documents, charts the paths of four family members after the U.S. government begins detaining Vietnamese Americans.
