Select Published Works (Human Pursuits 31/12/21)
A survey of some of the best things I published in 2021
VANCOUVER – 2021 was not a great year by any stretch of the imagination, but it wasn’t all bad. Between calamities, both real and imagined, moments of creativity and connection could still be found. There were photos to capture, questions to ask, words to write. Somehow between my actual job and this, I found time to move, go to Mexico and (unfortunately) catch COVID. Again, not great, but it could’ve been worse.
While I wasn’t nearly as consistent a creator as I’d like to be, a quick scan of the archives reveals a lot of work that I’m still proud of, and which might be worth a second look. With this in mind, I’ve put together a highlight reel of Select Published Works from the past year. There was no real selection criteria. Interviews, comments, reviews– everything was fair game. The result is a scattered snapshot of a pretty scattered year.
Finally, I wanted to take a second to thank anyone who has shared their time with me this year. Human Pursuits may not be the biggest (yet) but I really think it – and the community around it – is the best. Whether you’re subscribed, or simply enjoy checking-in, your support does not go unnoticed. Thank you.

1) Brynn Wallner and the Positive Influence of Painting People’s Pets
I conducted a lot of great interviews for Human Pursuits this year, but Brynn was the first so I included her here for sentimental reasons. Plus, she painted Stu. By hand!!
2) Dijon’s “alley-oop” is a Proper Chune
Still waiting for him to reply to my DM requesting an interview, but that’s OK. Absolutely still slaps.
3) HBO’s White Lotus is apathetic escapism at its finest (Link Dump 22/08/21)
Without a doubt, the best compliment I received this year was when a high ranking executive at CBC ended a meeting saying he read this piece and liked it. We had never spoken to each other before… and have not spoken since.
This article resonated with people in ways I really didn’t expect. In doing so, it gave me permission to be more open and (barf) vulnerable with my writing. Pretty much everything I’ve written for Human Pursuits since has been much more personal.
5) COVID Christmas comes early (Human Pursuits 24/12/21)
Sooooo yeah, I got COVID. My symptoms showed up Christmas Eve and have been mild. Dry cough, some congestion. Every night I wake up with my shirt soaked in cold sweat and have to change which is uncomfortable but still better than what I would’ve expected a year ago. That said, this shit still sucks. Get vaccinated if you haven’t, or boosted if it’s available.
