Sonic self-portraits (My Top 50 Favourite Songs)
If you like any of these songs, there’s a good chance we understand each other at a metaphysical level
VANCOUVER – For audiophiles, there’s no greater pastime than sitting down with a cup of coffee, firing up your preferred streaming service, and ranking some chunes. So when my uncle Scott asked me to contribute to his Top 50 Favourite Songs project, I was more than happy to oblige. The idea, as Scott explains, is to create a sort of response to Rolling Stone’s recent list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Per his editorial vision, my selections centred on personal favourites, be it singles, B-sides or deep cuts. The result is nothing short of a sonic self-portrait; a collection of pop, emo, funk and hip-hop that says little about the culture at large, but a lot about the person doing the curation. If you like any of these songs – or anything from my dad’s list – then there’s a good chance we understand each other at a metaphysical level
You can find my list, and others, over at Rock Critics. I also threw the songs into a Spotify playlist for your listening pleasure. It features everything from the 1975 to Björk to Chaka Khan and Broken Social Scene. Hopefully you enjoy it even half as much as I do.
