Welcome to Human Pursuits, the column that features need-to-know names and stories in media and other creative spaces. Today, words and photos from Paris, and some more updates from Friends of the Newsletter.
I saw two apple turnovers from Boulangerie Poilâne and a mom with a lot of rings on her fingers smoking next to her baby outside Noir and I saw couples picnicking along the banks of the Seine and young Parisians buying bouquets of fleurs for €3 and I saw long lines outside of Notre-Dame and teenagers eating baguettes on stoops in the 6th arrondissement and I saw Jardin du Luxembourg in the sun and a small blister on my left foot and un Bavette black angus à l’échalote at Café Varenne and I saw the street lights come on outside Bar American.
I saw the Metro at eight o’clock on a Tuesday morning and Hall 2 at Gare Montparnasse thirty minutes later and there was The Hall of Mirrors and the Ladurée cart near Versaille’s exit and I saw two geese on the lawn outside and Leah biking along the side of the Grand Canal and I saw Vigipirate guards with machine guns strolling the paths beneath the Eiffel Tower and a lot of women wearing scarves and a lot of men wearing nice denim and I saw a table for two at Ober Mama and truffle pizza that took up most of the table and a pug named Gigi seated inside by the bar and a group of sorority girls from the United States over my shoulder talking about some girl who “freaked out” and I saw people smoking cigarettes on the sidewalks in Montmarte and Mads Mikkelsen selling Zegna glasses in ads across the city.
I saw waiters arranging chairs Wednesday morning along Boulevard Raspail and I saw the Louvre and the Mona Lisa and I saw two crepes cut in half so that Leah and I could share them; one with ham and cheese, the other with Nutella and banana.
